An Overview Of Apollo 11 Mission - Free Essay Example

Apollo 11 Mission The Apollo Program was initiated in 1963 and was completed in 1972. The purpose of this program was to place a man on the moon, explore the surface of the moon, and develop the ability for man to work in the lunar environment (Loff, P.1). There were seventeen Apollo missions in total, however, only six of the seventeen placed man on the moon. Apollo 11 was the first of these missions to accomplish the goal of placing a man on the moon. (National Air and Space Museum) It was a televised event that the world will probably never forget. From the first footstep made by Neil Armstrong to the American flag that was proudly placed on the moons surface; the astronauts of the lunar module Eagle, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins changed history as we knew it on July 20, 1969. On July 16, 1969, the world watched as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) loaded three astronauts aboard the lunar module Eagle that sat on a launch pad at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Once launched, the lunar module Eagle raced into space where it made one and a half orbits before getting the ok to head towards the moon. The Apollo 11 mission began and in only four short days the goal of the Apollo mission would come to fruition. Neil Armstrong, the first astronaut to step onto the moons surface, joined NASA in 1962 where he was command pilot on the Gemini VIII mission and later would become the spacecraft commander for Apollo 11. He was an educated man who studied aeronautical engineering at Purdue University on a United States Navy scholarship. Neil served in the Korean War as a pilot who flew combat missions. After joining NASA, Mr. Armstrong served as a test pilot to aircraft that could reach top speeds of four thousand miles per hour, he also serve d as an engineer (Biography.com, P.2). When Neil Armstrong stepped on to the moons surface, the world watched in amazement. America achieved what many thought was impossible. We not only beat Russia to the moon, we were the first to step foot on it and Neil Armstrongs words Thats one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind was forever embedded in history (Dunbar, P.1). Mr. Armstrong would go on to have many more accomplishments in his NASA career before leaving in 1971. Neil passed away at the age of 82, just a few weeks after receiving an open-heart bypass surgery (Biography.com, P.5). Buzz Aldrin was the second man on the moon and he assisted Neil Armstrong with placing the American flag on the moons surface. Like Neil, Buzz was a pilot during the Korean War. He participated in the 1963 Gemini mission and was later chosen for the Apollo 11 mission. Buzz got his pilot experience while serving in the United States Air Force. Buzz held a doctorate degree and laid the groundwork for underwater training techniques to simulate spacewalking. Despite his amazing career, Buzz admitted in his autobiography, Return to Earth, that he battled depression and alcoholism during his time with NASA. Once he obtained sobriety Buzz went on to write several books, appeared on many television shows, he played a small role in the movie Transformers, promoted space exploration by collaborating with Snoop Dogg and Talib Kweli to create a song called Rocket Experience and he inspired Disneys Buzz Lightyear character. Here are a couple interesting facts about Buzz Aldrin, his mothers maiden name was Moon (how ironic) and Buzz once punched a man in the face for saying the moon landing was fake. (who could blame him). Buzz Aldrin is currently 88 years old and doing well. Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins left space on July 22, 1969, and returned to Earth on July 24th. They were required to remain in a 21-day quarantine as a precaution against uncertain threats of contagion (National Air and Space Museum, P.2). Once quarantine was complete, a ticker-tape parade was provided for the three astronauts, where New Yorkers dropped a record amount of paper products onto the streets to celebrate and welcome home the returning heroes (National Air and Space Museum, P.3). These are best known as respiratory alkalosis, respiratory acidosis, metabolic alkalosis and metabolic acidosis. Each imbalance works in its own way and causes different effects on the body. The pathophysiology of the acid base imbalance, respiratory alkalosis, is best described by a human taking deep and rapid respirations resulting in alveolar hyperventilation. When a person experiences hyperventilation, it results in the loss of carbon dioxide. â€Å"The PaCO2 is 45mm Hg and the pH is less than normal† (Huether McCance, 2012). The pathophysiology of metabolic alkalosis is best described as the rapid loss of metabolic acid which then causes bicarbonate concentration to increase. â€Å"Metabolic alkalosis is recognized by increases in both arterial blood pH, alkalemia, and plasma bicarbonate concentration. Josef Affourtit Affourtit.2 February 10th, 2017 CLAS1101 The Iliad: Greeks and Their Love for ‘War’ It has long been a popular scholarly opinion that the Greeks in the Iliad were lovers of war and violence. The Greeks were most definitely primal beasts, and blood shedders, a fact made abundantly clear in the Iliad. However, I think that the Greeks were not lovers of war, furthermore I think this interpretation is shortsighted. The amount of violence in the Iliad seems to be evidence for their love of war, but the ancient world was primal and passionate, and these ancient beasts were not strangers to bloodshed and violence. Thus, I think the amount of violence in the Iliad does not perpetuate the Greeks love for war, but rather shows their†¦show more content†¦When a Greek hero kills a Trojan commander or hero, the Greeks rejoice because there was immediate honor granted to the killer. He has done well for his name and his people, which is why the kill is celebrated. If the Hero had slain a goat, the Greeks would not have rejoiced (unless they were particularly famished tha t day), because the Greeks do not celebrate bloodshed for the sake of red, they celebrate honor and immortality granted to those who exhibit greatness. This is also why I think Homer and other story-telling decedents choose to remember those that are bastards and those that are highborn. A bastard being less honorable than a noble highborn man, and than those born from human woman and a god for a father. I cannot accept that through millennia of retellings of the Iliad, such a seemingly minuscule detail such as bastard would be kept without reason. The description ‘bastard’ appears many times during the bloodshed of the Iliad. In Book IV, â€Å"As the javelin homed in on Democoà ¶n, Pram’s bastard son from his horse farm in Abydos† (Homer, Iliad 4), it is again mentioned the honor associated with the kill, a bastard boy, rather than a hero. Then, Meges kills Pedaeus in Book V, Homer makes sure to detail â€Å"Though he was a bastard†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . The case of Marguerite M presents an ethical dilemma. Medical ethics play a special role in medicine and is directly concerned with its practice. Its role has continued to evolve as changes develop in medicine with new technology, financing and medical care. Furthermore, medical ethics considers the virtues of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice among some of its most respected. Physicians are sworn to non-maleficence, or to first do no harm. Their work is to help others, beneficence, and also perform so that others may benefit from it. To that end, the major role of medical ethics is to regulate behavior among healthcare professionals. When considering an ethical dilemma the facts are examined, not emotions and not even individual or religious beliefs. The facts in this case involve 2 patients. Firstly, Marguerite, an 89 year old female who experienced a myocardial infarction and the cause was unknown at the time of admission. Her doctor ordered an angiogram to test for the cause, and based on the results, would plan and provide treatment. On the other hand, Sarah, a 45 year old female, also experienced a massive heart attack, but in her case the emergency room doctors were able to determine the cause and expeditiously planned for treatment. Simultaneously, both patients required an immediate surgical procedure and time was a major consideration due to the nature of their conditions. Most research in job design suggests taking a look at the aspect of job structure. This structure tells us how these elements in a job are organized can act to increase or decrease effort. When I took a look at the Job Characteristics Model (JCM) it describes five core job dimensions that managers should look into to increase motivation within employees. I wondered about those statements and ask myself ‘ Do they like their job, do they want to be here, and most of all are they committed or can they become committed? This is why I thought, Motivating by Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model was interesting. The dimensions are as follow, Skill variety, having enough activities in a job â€Å"so the worker can use a number of different skills and talent† (Robbins ; Judge, 2011, â€Å"Motivation by Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model†)†¦ Task identity, how much of the â€Å"job requires completion of a whole and identifiable piece of work† (Robbins ; Judge, 2011, â€Å"Motivation by Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model†) meaning that if your job requires doing one or two activities it may score low on the model and may not become experienced, meaningfulness at work. They also my score low on internal work motivation. Task significance is another element in job structure was jobs should be designed to have an impact on employee’s lives or work with other people. Autonomy is an important connection also to job structure because an employee which has no freedom to be independent and discrete in scheduling the work and carry it out will score low on the JCM. The one most important element in job design is feedback, it not only lower absenteeism and turnover but the psychological states of mind of the employee and employer scores high on the â€Å"knowledge of the actual results of the work activities† (Robbins ; Judge, 2011, â€Å"Motivation by Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model†). Scoring high on the five dimensions is critical to the psychological states, resulting in experienced meaningfulness of the work and personal and workout comes are high also such as â€Å"high internal work motivation, quality work performance, satisfaction with the work, and low absenteeism and turnover† (Robbins ; Judge, 2011, â€Å"Motivation by Job Design: The Job Characteristics Model†).
